Kometen gehören zu den kleinen, aber dafür ungeheuer zahlreichen Mitgliedern unseres Planetensystems. Im Unterschied zu den Asteroiden, die massive Felsblöcke oder, wie man seit neuestem ziemlich sicher weiß, in einigen Fällen auch lockere Ansammlungen von Gesteinsschutt sind, handelt es sich bei Kometen um "Schmutzige Schneebälle".
